Terms of Use
ZagMap ("ZagMap", "we", "us") provides the mapping application at zagmap.com and any ZagMap mobile app (together, the "Service"). By using the Service you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, do not use the Service.
The Service
ZagMap is a backcountry mapping tool: terrain, contours, roads, trails, land ownership, imagery and related layers for the western United States, with tools for drawing, measuring, recording GPS tracks and saving maps offline. The Service is under active development and is provided free of charge while we build it. Features may change, be added or be removed without notice.
Accounts
Some features require an account. You must provide a valid email address and keep your password confidential; you are responsible for activity under your account. Accounts are for personal, non-commercial use unless we agree otherwise in writing. We may suspend or close an account that violates these Terms.
Your content
Waypoints, tracks, drawings, folders and other objects you create remain yours. You grant us only the right to store and display them back to you (including on your other devices when you are signed in) so the Service can work. Do not upload content that is unlawful or that you do not have the right to share.
Acceptable use
- Do not bulk-download, scrape, re-host or redistribute map data or imagery served through the Service beyond the offline-download feature the app provides for your own use.
- Do not attempt to bypass sign-in gates, rate limits or usage restrictions, or to access other users' data.
- Do not use the Service to build a competing map dataset or to train models on third-party imagery served through it.
- Do not use the Service for real-time turn-by-turn vehicle navigation.
Map content & third-party terms
The Service combines data we build ourselves from public sources with content licensed from third parties. Some of that content carries its own terms that also bind you when you use it through the Service.
Google Maps content. The Service includes Google Maps features and content (the Google satellite basemap, delivered through the Google Map Tiles API). Your use of Google Maps features and content is subject to the Google Maps/Google Earth Additional Terms of Service and the Google Privacy Policy. Google imagery is displayed live only; it is never included in offline downloads.
Microsoft Azure Maps content. The aerial basemap labelled Azure is delivered by Microsoft Azure Maps and is subject to Microsoft's Azure terms. It is displayed live only and is never included in offline downloads.

Where a source requires attribution it is shown on the map (the credit line and the ⓘ credits dialog). You must not remove or obscure attribution.
Backcountry safety & disclaimer
Maps, elevation, slope angles, contours, road and trail access, land ownership and weather shown in the Service are compiled from sources of varying age and accuracy and may be wrong, incomplete or out of date. Slope-angle shading is not an avalanche forecast. Road and trail access classifications are not a substitute for posted signs, permits or current regulations. Always verify conditions in the field and carry a backup means of navigation.
THE SERVICE IS PROVIDED "AS IS" AND "AS AVAILABLE", WITHOUT WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND. TO THE FULLEST EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, ZAGMAP IS NOT LIABLE FOR ANY LOSS, INJURY OR DAMAGE ARISING FROM USE OF OR RELIANCE ON THE SERVICE, INCLUDING DECISIONS MADE IN THE BACKCOUNTRY. You use the Service at your own risk.
Changes to these Terms
We may update these Terms as the Service develops. The date at the top shows the current version; continued use after a change means you accept the updated Terms.
Privacy Policy
This section explains what the Service collects, why, and who else receives data when you use it. We do not sell personal data and we do not show advertising.
What we collect and store

| Saved maps | When you are signed in, the objects you create (waypoints, tracks, drawings, folders, their names and colours) and the map view are saved to your account so they follow you across devices. Saving runs automatically every 30 seconds while signed in. |
| Sign-in state | An HttpOnly session cookie that expires after 30 days, and a per-account counter used to sign you out everywhere when you log out. |
| Abuse controls | Failed sign-in attempts are counted per account and per IP address for a short window to block password guessing. Nothing else about your IP address is stored by the Service. |
Data that stays on your device
The Service keeps working data in your browser or app storage: your drawn objects and settings, offline map downloads (tiles and layer packs you choose to download), the search index, and any GPS track you are recording. A GPS recording is stored on your device; it reaches our servers only if you are signed in and it is saved as part of your map. Clearing site data or uninstalling the app removes this local data.
Location
The Service asks for device location only when you use a feature that needs it: centring the map on you, recording a track, or following directions. Location is used on your device for that feature. We do not maintain a location history on our servers beyond what you choose to save in your map.
Microphone
Voice commands use your browser's speech recognition and run only after you press the microphone button. On Chrome the audio is processed by Google's speech service. The Service stores no audio and no transcript; recognised text is placed in the search box until the command runs.
Third-party services contacted from your device
Map layers are fetched directly from their providers as you pan and zoom, so those providers receive your IP address and the tile coordinates you view, under their own privacy policies:
- Google (satellite basemap, and speech recognition in Chrome).
- Microsoft (Azure Maps aerial basemap; Planetary Computer for Sentinel-2 and NAIP imagery).
- Esri (World Imagery basemap and ArcGIS-hosted land, fire and boundary services).
- Open-Meteo (weather forecasts for the point you choose).
- OpenStreetMap Foundation (Nominatim geocoding of place searches you type; Overpass for the snap tool).
- US government services (USGS, NOAA, BLM, USDA, NIFC) for public data layers.
- Cloudflare, which hosts the Service and delivers most of our own map data; the site also loads Cloudflare Web Analytics, a cookie-free, aggregate page-view measurement that does not track you across sites.
Cookies
The only cookie the Service sets is the sign-in session cookie described above. We use no advertising or cross-site tracking cookies.
Retention and deletion
Account and saved-map data are kept while your account exists. To delete your account and everything stored with it, email us from the address on the account (see Contact). Data on your device is under your control at all times.
Children
The Service is not directed at children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect personal data from them.

We will update this page when our data practices change and revise the date at the top.
